Shorti and Borti’s Adventure: A Tale of Two Clever Mice

Shorti and Borti’s Adventure: A Tale of Two Clever Mice

Once upon a time, in a quiet little village, there lived two mice named Shorti and Borti.
Their early life was filled with hardship—scarcity of food had taken their parents away, and they were left to survive on their own.

A Strange Discovery

One day, the two mice went to a nearby field in search of food. Shorti spotted a large radish and called out:

“Borti, take this one out! It’s a good one!”

Borti tugged at the radish with all his strength. Suddenly, it popped out of the ground, and Borti went tumbling backward from the force!

To their surprise, a large hole appeared where the radish had been, and smoke was rising from it.

Curious, they decided to climb down the hole to see where it led.

The Ogre’s Kitchen

At the bottom, they found themselves in a strange underground home. Inside, a fox and an ogre were busy cooking Shrabat—a traditional dish of Gilgit-Baltistan made with wheat flour, water, and butter, often cooked in massive pots during weddings.

The mice quickly hid in a side room, built in the traditional Gilgit-Baltistan style with a small door leading into the main living area. Inside, they found bags full of dry fruits—apricot seeds, almonds, and dried apricots.

They couldn’t resist and began eating until their bellies were round and full.

Trouble Brewing

While cooking, the ogre heard faint rustling noises from the inner room. He stepped in to check, but Shorti and Borti cleverly hid among the dry fruit bags.

Unfortunately, Borti had eaten too many dried apricots and whispered nervously:

“Shorti, pishekak! (Shorti, my fart is coming!)”

Chup thee bai bagarazo, loi ga yanch parujany nay bey khany!
(“Quiet, you bad-faced one! They’ll hear us and gobble us up!”)

But Borti’s stomach was rumbling too much.

“Shorti, pishekak!” (Shorti, I really can’t hold it!)

Rathy bagaracho, daru parudy to bey khan!
(“Hold it, bad-faced one! If they hear you, they’ll eat us alive!”)

Finally, Borti whispered,

“Shorti, I really can’t!”

“Alright,” Shorti sighed, “then do it quietly.”

The Fart That Saved Them

Borti tried his best, but the fart came out like a loud blast!

Startled, the ogre slipped and fell headfirst into the giant pot of shrabat, while the fox stumbled and tumbled into the fire below.

When the mice peeked through the door crack, they found that both the ogre and fox were gone. The danger had passed!

A Happy Ending

Shorti and Borti wasted no time. They collected all the dry fruits they could carry and scurried home. From that day on, the two little mice lived happily, with full bellies and joyful hearts.
