Oshi Ashpo, the Flying Wind Horse
Once upon a time, in the misty mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, a group of shepherds spent their days grazing sheep in green meadows and their nights sitting around a warm bonfire, telling stories.
One evening, as the fire crackled,
they whispered nervously about a fierce lion that roamed the forest. But
among them sat a mischievous shepherd who was secretly a thief. While the
others trembled, he puffed his chest and boasted loudly,
“A lion? Ha! I’d chop that beast
into tiny pieces if I ever saw him!”
What he didn’t know was that the lion
himself was lurking nearby, listening carefully… and getting absolutely
terrified of this “fearless” shepherd.
Later that night, everyone fell
asleep. The thief crept out, planning to steal a fat sheep for himself.
Meanwhile, the lion also crept into the sheep pen, planning to grab dinner.
In the pitch dark, the shepherd
groped around, feeling for the fattest sheep. His hands landed on a large, warm
back, and he thought, Perfect, this one’s nice and plump! He tied it up,
dragged it down to the meadow, tied it to a tree, and went to sleep, dreaming
of roasted meat.
The next morning, a group of hunters passed by and froze in shock. The shepherd was sleeping peacefully next to a terrified, bound lion!
“This man must be a lion-tamer!” the
hunters gasped.
They rushed to tell the king, who
immediately summoned the “brave” shepherd. Amused and impressed, the king
ordered him to fight the lion in front of the royal court. The poor
shepherd was shaking in fear, but the lion — remembering those chilling words
from the bonfire — was even more scared! The lion backed away, trembling, and
the shepherd accidentally became a hero.
The king was so impressed, he made
him Commander of the Army.
Soon, a war broke out, and the
shepherd was brought to the royal stables to pick a warhorse. He knew nothing
about horses and picked the smallest one out of fear.
“Brilliant choice!” said the king.
“You’ve chosen Oshi Ashpo, the Wind Horse — the fiercest and fastest of
them all!”
Before the shepherd could object,
Oshi Ashpo spread its massive wings and shot into the sky. The poor man
clung to its neck, screaming, grabbing branches to stop himself — but instead,
he uprooted entire trees as they soared through the forest.
When he landed on the battlefield,
the enemy saw a wild-eyed man on a flying horse, carrying uprooted trees like
weapons. They were so terrified they fled without a fight.
The shepherd returned, proudly
declaring,
“They all ran when they saw me
pulling trees from the ground!”
From that day, the “brave” shepherd
became the king’s permanent army chief — all thanks to a lion’s fear, a flying
horse, and some very lucky accidents!
