🦊 The Hungry Fox and the Mulberry Tree – A Moral Story for Kids

Introduction

Once upon a time, deep in the heart of a thick green forest, there lived a clever fox. The forest was his home and his hunting ground. Every day, he searched for food—rats hiding in burrows, small birds resting in nests, and fruits that had fallen from the tall trees. Life in the jungle was simple but satisfying. The fox had learned to survive on whatever the forest offered him.

But one hot summer, things changed. The burning heat of the sun dried the land, and soon a spark of fire turned the peaceful forest into a raging inferno. This was the beginning of the fox’s greatest struggle for survival.

Life Before the Fire

The fox enjoyed his life in the forest. He knew every corner, every hidden trail, and every shady tree. On cool evenings, he loved to rest under the big banyan tree. In the mornings, he chased after tiny creatures, filling his belly with whatever he could catch. He was content, thinking that the forest would always protect him.

But nature had different plans. The heat of summer grew unbearable. Leaves turned brown, streams dried up, and the air felt heavy and hot.

The Forest Fire

One afternoon, a sudden spark on dry grass turned into flames. At first, it was small, but the wind carried it quickly across the forest. The fire roared louder and louder, spreading like a monster with fiery arms.

Birds flew in panic, animals ran in every direction, and the once-lively jungle filled with smoke and screams. Burrows of rats and moles burned, nests of birds turned into ash, and tall trees fell with crackling sounds.

The poor fox ran for his life, his heart pounding. When he looked back, he saw his beautiful forest swallowed by flames. Everything he once depended on was gone—his food, his shelter, his world.

The Fox’s Struggle for Food

For days, the fox wandered in search of food. The forest had turned into black ashes, with nothing left to eat. Hunger gnawed at his stomach, and weakness slowed his steps.

Finally, he thought, “If I cannot survive in the forest, I must take the risk of going near human settlements. Perhaps I will find something there to eat.”

It was a dangerous decision because humans feared foxes and often chased them away. But the starving fox had no choice.

The Journey to the Village

Carefully, the fox sneaked toward a nearby village. He stayed close to bushes, hiding whenever he heard voices. He was terrified of being noticed, but his hunger pushed him forward.

At last, his eyes fell upon a big mulberry tree near the edge of the village. The tree was full of ripe, juicy fruits, and several had already fallen to the ground. The fox’s mouth watered.

The Fox and the Mulberries

Without wasting a moment, the fox rushed under the tree. He began eating the ripe mulberries one by one. They were sweet, juicy, and refreshing. For the first time in days, the fox felt life return to his body.

He was so lost in his meal that he forgot the danger of being seen by humans.

The Shepherd’s Shout

Nearby, a shepherd was taking his sheep out for grazing. Suddenly, he spotted the fox under the mulberry tree. Alarmed, he shouted:

“Fox! A fox! Beware, he may attack our lambs!”

His voice echoed in the village. People came out of their homes, children screamed, and dogs barked loudly. The once-happy fox now realized his terrible mistake.

The Fox’s Dilemma

The fox’s heart raced. He thought, “Should I continue eating or should I run away to save my life? If I stay here, they may kill me. If I run, at least I will live.”

Quickly, he grabbed a few mulberries in his mouth and ran as fast as his legs could carry him. His tail brushed the grass, his paws hit the ground like drums, and his heart pounded in fear.

The shepherd and villagers tried to chase him, but the clever fox was too fast. He dashed back toward the forest, disappearing into the bushes.

Safe but Hungry Again

Breathless, the fox stopped deep in the forest. He looked back to make sure no one had followed him. Though he had escaped, his stomach was still not full. The handful of mulberries had given him only a little strength.

Still, he sighed in relief. “I may be hungry,” he thought, “but at least I am alive. If I had been greedy and stayed longer, I would not be breathing right now.”

Moral of the Story

This story of the hungry fox and the mulberry tree teaches us important life lessons:

  1. Greed can be dangerous – The fox was so busy eating that he forgot the risk of being caught. Greed often blinds us to danger.

  2. Safety comes first – Food and wealth are valuable, but nothing is more precious than life.

  3. Think before you act – The fox realized too late that ignoring danger could cost him everything.
