๐ The Magical Dodosharai Go (Cow Mother) and Her Loving Son
The Family in the Village
Long ago, in a peaceful little village surrounded by green fields and tall trees, there lived a small family. The family was simple yet happy. There was a hardworking father, a gentle mother, and their cheerful young son.
The father’s duty was to go out hunting every day. He would walk deep into the forest with his bow and arrows, bringing back food for the household. The mother stayed at home, sweeping the floors, cooking meals, and caring for their child.
Their son was playful and innocent. He loved listening to stories from his mother and waited eagerly for his father’s return from the jungle. Life was not always easy, but together they made it beautiful.
A Quarrel and a Curse
One evening, after the father returned from the forest, a quarrel broke out between husband and wife.
“You eat outside in the jungle while we sit hungry at home,” the wife said angrily. “Our child and I wait the whole day without food until you return.”
The husband denied it. “No, that is not true! I do not eat outside. I only eat at home with you and our son.”
But their disagreement grew stronger, and finally, out of frustration, they made a strange bet that sounded more like a curse.
The husband declared, “If I ever eat food outside, may I be turned into a dodosharai dono—an ox.”
The wife replied, “And if I ever eat outside, may I turn into a dodosharai go—a cow.”
They both agreed, thinking such a thing could never happen. But fate had already written another story for them.
The Mother’s Transformation
The next morning, the father left for the jungle as usual. The wife cleaned the house with care. While sweeping, she found a single grain of wheat hidden in the dust.
She looked at it closely. “Ah, just one grain,” she thought. “This will not matter.” Forgetting the bet she had made with her husband, she placed it in her mouth.
In that very moment, magic struck. With a sudden flash, she transformed into a dodosharai go, a cow. Without a word, she walked out of the house and went straight to the stable where cows were kept.
When the father returned from the forest, he did not see his wife. He asked his son, “Where is your mother?”
The little boy looked sad and pointed toward the stable. “Father, she has turned into a cow. She is there now.”
The Stepmother’s Trick
Days passed, and the father, needing someone to care for the household, brought another woman into the home. Soon, she gave birth to her own child.
But this new mother was unkind to the first wife’s son. For her own child, she baked round, soft fiti (wheat bread), golden and warm. But for the stepson, she played a cruel trick—she wrapped a stone in a thin layer of dough and baked it, giving it to him as if it were bread.
The boy felt hungry and weak. His stomach growled, but he could not complain to his father, who trusted the new wife.
One day, with tears in his eyes, he ran to the stable where his real mother, now a cow, lived.
“Mother, I am so hungry,” he whispered, hugging her neck. “The stepmother gives me stones covered in dough. I have nothing to eat.”
The cow looked at him with gentle eyes filled with love. “Do not cry, my son,” she said softly. Then she flapped her ear—plop!—a fresh, round fiti fell to the ground. She flapped the other ear—plop!—and another fiti appeared.
The boy’s eyes widened with joy. He ate the bread happily, his hunger gone. From that day on, whenever he was hungry, he went to his cow-mother, who fed him with magical bread from her ears.
Day by day, he grew strong, healthy, and bright.
The Secret Revealed
The stepmother soon grew suspicious. “Why does the boy look so healthy?” she wondered. “I give him only fake bread, yet he looks stronger than my own son.”
One afternoon, she decided to spy on him. Hiding behind the stable, she watched as the boy hugged the cow and cried about his hunger. She saw with her own eyes the cow flapping her ears and magical bread falling to the ground.
Her heart filled with envy and greed. She rushed to her husband and said, “That cow must be slaughtered. We cannot keep her any longer.”
The father hesitated, but eventually, he agreed, not knowing the cow was his first wife.
A Mother’s Last Gift
The little boy overheard their cruel plan. With tears rolling down his cheeks, he ran to the cow and hugged her tightly.
“Mama, they want to slaughter you!” he cried. “What will I do without you?”
The cow-mother gently licked his face and spoke softly, “Do not be afraid, my son. Even if they take my life, my love will stay with you. Listen carefully. When they slaughter me, do not eat my share of meat—the bago. Instead, take it and hide it under a stone in a cave in the mountains. Visit that place every day.”
The boy nodded through his tears, promising to obey.
As the stepmother planned, the cow was slaughtered. The boy took the bago, just as his mother had told him, and placed it carefully under a stone in a hidden cave in the mountains.
The next day, when he lifted the stone, to his amazement, he found a freshly baked, warm fiti waiting for him. Each day, when he visited, the same miracle happened—a new fiti appeared for him to eat.
The boy grew stronger, wiser, and kinder. With each passing year, he became a young man, guided and blessed by his mother’s everlasting love.
๐ Moral of the Story
This story reminds us that a mother’s love never ends. Even when she is gone, her blessings remain with her children, protecting them, feeding them, and helping them grow.
Love, sacrifice, and kindness always find a way to shine, just like the magical bread of the cow-mother.
